PicoWay: Handpieces, Goals and Choosing Without Disappointment

PicoWay: start with your goal, not the device name

Perhaps a friend told you about her faded tattoo or smoother-looking skin, and now you are researching PicoWay. Advertisements may promise “four wavelengths” or “no downtime”. The essential detail is that PicoWay is Candela's specific picosecond laser platform. What it can do for you depends on which handpiece is installed, the colour or nature of the target, your phototype and treatment settings. A logo does not establish whether every accessory is available or treatment is suitable.

Here the focus is PicoWay's system of different light-delivery options. It is not the same as PicoSure Pro, whose core laser is a 755 nm alexandrite platform, or picosecond technology in general. These distinctions matter particularly for acne scars, spots and melasma rather than tattoos, because handpiece-specific indications differ.

Which PicoWay handpieces exist, and why aren't they one treatment?

Candela describes full-beam Zoom 532/1064 nm, separate 730 and 785 nm wavelength options, fractional Resolve 532/1064 nm, and Resolve Fusion. The figures 532, 730, 785 and 1064 are wavelengths in nanometres, not strength settings. They interact differently with tattoo inks, melanin and surrounding tissue. According to the manufacturer, 532 nm is used for certain red, yellow and orange inks within specified phototypes; 730/785 nm address some blue and green pigments; and 1064 nm addresses several darker colours, with broader tattoo-removal phototype coverage in the US indication information.

Zoom uses a relatively unified beam for pigment targets. Resolve divides energy into microbeams for certain skin-texture, scar and wrinkle applications, depending on the wavelength and approved indication. Resolve Fusion modifies the microbeam pattern with an accompanying zone of light; “Fusion” is not a synonym for safer or stronger treatment for all faces. Check exactly which Fusion version is present, its documentation and corresponding skin-type restrictions.

Picosecond pulses produce rapid mechanical or photoacoustic effects on pigment. Fractional treatment can also create microscopic controlled tissue responses followed by gradual remodelling. Neither process promises instant collagen renewal at lunchtime; healing is individual, and heat-related effects and complications have not disappeared.

A handpiece-by-handpiece decision guide

PicoWay configuration Why it may be considered Main boundary
Zoom 532 nm Some coloured tattoos and defined benign pigmented lesions. US tattoo indications specify phototypes I–III; not automatically suited to all dark skin.
Zoom 1064 nm Dark tattoo inks and selected pigmentation problems. The broad tattoo-removal phototype range does not make it universal for all dark spots.
730/785 nm options Certain blue and green inks. Their ink, skin-type and indication combinations vary; an installed handpiece cannot be assumed.
Resolve 532/1064 nm Depending on configuration, fractional treatment of texture, wrinkles, scars or pigment. US acne-scar indications specifically include Resolve 1064 nm, phototypes II–V.
Resolve Fusion Special fractional delivery for specified benign pigment issues, and wrinkles in some configurations. Do not transfer every Fusion indication to all Fusion versions or standard Resolve.

This table is a consultation aid, not a prescription. Candela's product page separates broad “applications” from specific “indications for use”; wording, accessories and phototypes can differ. Request documentation for the actual installed configuration and country of use. PicoWay has US FDA 510(k) records for several development stages, including K162454 (2017) and K220853 (2022). Such determinations do not grant indefinite universal clearance across all countries and procedures.

If tattoo removal is the goal, how can you plan realistically?

Tattoos differ in colours, depth, ink density, layers and previous treatments. White, yellow and other challenging pigments can behave unpredictably, and a single picture may contain several manufacturers' inks. PicoWay's multiple wavelengths permit choices for different targets; they do not promise every tattoo will disappear in one visit. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that lasers fragment ink and the body clears particles progressively, with treatment intervals for healing.

Do not estimate sessions from a photo of a small black tattoo if yours is large, multicoloured or layered. Ask for an ink-by-ink plan: where might 1064 nm be used and where 532, 730 or 785 nm? If a particular accessory is absent, you should know before payment and may need another provider or strategy. “We have PicoWay” is not a complete plan.

Permanent makeup on brows or lips is a different case. Mixed cosmetic pigments may shift colour after laser exposure. An arm tattoo is not equivalent to pigment close to facial structures. The permanent makeup removal guide covers its additional issues; discuss test strategies, limitations and risks with your doctor. Skin discolouration or a scar may become more conspicuous than the remaining ink.

Why are acne scars, wrinkles and melasma different decisions?

First classify acne scars. In Candela's US information, fractional Resolve 1064 nm is listed for acne scars in phototypes II–V. Mild unevenness, narrow deep pits and tethered depressions behave differently. For some scars, subcision (releasing an adherent scar), focal techniques or a combined programme may be more useful than repeated identical laser sessions. Active acne should be controlled first so new marks do not keep forming.

Fractional treatment may improve superficial wrinkles or skin texture, but cannot remove substantial skin excess or deep folds arising from changes in tissue volume. A subtle, natural outcome is exactly what some people want; others may find it insufficient. Discuss the expected degree of change in words as well as photographs taken under comparable lighting.

Melasma is a long-term pigment condition that often returns, influenced by sunlight and hormonal factors. Consistent light protection and topical management should form the starting point of the discussion. Candela lists melasma among certain handpiece applications, but that does not mean every attachment has the same regulatory indication or that the laser outperforms established treatments. Clinical reviews available through October 2026 cover different picosecond devices, not every PicoWay handpiece separately; they find variable benefits and post-inflammatory darkening risks. With darker skin especially, ask why anticipated benefit outweighs the risk of worsened pigmentation and how the result will be maintained.

A brown lesion needs diagnosis before cosmetic laser. A mole changing in colour or outline should not simply be bleached away. A dermatologist decides on dermoscopy and, where necessary, biopsy. European laser guidance cautions against lasering melanocytic pigmented moles because it can obstruct timely cancer diagnosis.

How will it feel, and what will I look like tomorrow?

Different handpieces feel different. Tattoo removal may bring sharp snapping and local heat; fractional facial treatment often causes repeated tingling and warmth. Cooling or clinician-prescribed local anaesthetic may help, subject to suitability. Eye protection must match the wavelength. Near-eye work needs specialised professional shielding; closed eyelids are not enough.

When you look in the mirror Potentially ordinary response What to avoid planning
Immediately Redness or puffiness; temporary white frosting during tattoo work. Portrait photography or an event needing a predictable appearance.
Over the next days Dryness, pinpoint marks, a darker spot; tattoo removal may cause blisters and crusts. Foundation on broken skin, strong sun exposure and clothing friction.
After surface healing Skin may look calm while ink still fades or texture continues changing. Declaring failure immediately or arranging a rushed repeat session.

A uniform recovery time cannot be guaranteed for PicoWay. Candela advertises short social downtime for some fractional protocols, but redness varies by settings and individual response; tattoo treatment can demand more involved wound care. Discuss a wedding, holiday at the sea or public appearance before treatment, and do not schedule a first-ever session just before an important date.

Aftercare depends on whether the skin is intact. It commonly involves gentle cleansing, protection from rubbing, indicated dressings and leaving blisters and crusts alone. After healing, use daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and physical sun protection. Return to scrubs, acids, retinoids, saunas, hot baths, workouts and pools only when the clinician says the treated site has recovered; the platform name does not specify a safe number of days.

When should you postpone, and what are the warning signs?

Tell the clinician about a recent tan, medicines and supplements, abnormal scarring, cold sores, infection or active rashes, past reactions to light procedures and conditions affecting healing. Reconsider treatment if the lesion is undiagnosed, skin inflamed or sun avoidance impossible. Elective cosmetic treatment is normally deferred during pregnancy and breastfeeding; the American Academy of Dermatology specifically advises against laser tattoo removal then. Individual restrictions depend on the particular handpiece instructions and your health.

Complications can include burns, blisters, infection in damaged skin, lasting hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, altered texture and scarring. An elevated pigment-change risk in phototypes IV–VI does not mean every person in that range is ineligible: treatment needs individualisation and relevant clinical experience. Research in darker skin still has limitations in sample sizes and follow-up. Glowing reviews do not reliably measure rare complications.

Increasing severe pain, spreading hot redness, swelling, pus, fever or deep wounds warrant prompt assessment. Eye pain or vision change after laser exposure is urgent. Before treatment, establish who will read messages, provide out-of-hours advice and examine possible complications. The lack of such a pathway matters more than the machine's branding.

When will results appear—and how do you test the claims?

Tattoo fading is gradual as the body processes ink fragments, with session count depending on composition, depth, density and healing intervals. Texture changes may develop after redness disappears. Some pigmented conditions recur, especially if triggers persist. A sensible plan specifies the first goal and a review point, rather than requiring advance payment for an undefined number of visits.

Compare before-and-after images under the same light, scale, face position and known time interval. Ask about simultaneous products or procedures. “Clinically proven” should invite: for which handpiece, indication, skin type and comparator? The manufacturer's promotional improvement percentages for different conditions are not your personal probability of success.

At consultation, ask which PicoWay configuration and accessories are actually present, why that wavelength fits, whether diagnosis is confirmed, how partial improvement compares with needing another approach, what each step and follow-up costs, how pigment complications will be minimised and who is available afterwards. You need not agree immediately. Managing melasma with topical therapy, treating acne, observing a lesion or delaying tattoo removal may all be the sounder choice.

A few other questions

Does 785 nm guarantee removal of green ink?

No. A listed colour describes a possible target, not complete clearance of a particular mixture. Density, depth and skin response still matter.

Can two sites be treated with different handpieces during one visit?

Technical possibility is not medical suitability. The clinician should consider area, combined skin injury, anaesthetic need and whether you can care for both sites.

How do I confirm that a specific handpiece is available?

Ask the practice for the installed module or handpiece name and which proposed steps it performs. A picture of PicoWay on a website proves neither availability nor configuration.
