InBody 770 Body Analysis: How to Read the Results

Your weight may be unchanged while your clothes fit differently. Perhaps you started strength training and want to know whether your body composition changed, not simply the number on the scale. The InBody 770 estimates body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): a small electrical signal travels through body tissues, and the instrument uses the measured electrical properties to estimate body fat, fat-free tissue, water and regional values. This is neither an organ scan nor an exact measurement of every gram of muscle.

Its most useful role is comparing trends under similar conditions and interpreting them with an appropriately qualified professional. An InBody result alone cannot diagnose hormonal disease, causes of swelling, malnutrition or metabolic risk. A solitary body-fat percentage can mislead. Before looking for a supposedly ideal score, define the decision you hope the result will inform.

How is the 770 different from ordinary scales?

Household scales weigh you; some also estimate composition using simpler methods. The professional InBody 770 has electrodes for both hands and feet. The technical specification for the original InBody 770 lists 30 impedance measurements at six frequencies (1, 5, 50, 250, 500 and 1000 kHz) across five segments: both arms, both legs and the trunk. Measurement takes approximately 60 seconds; preparation, suitability checks and interpretation add to the appointment. Check the model carefully: the manufacturer’s current online catalogue page labelled 770 actually describes a different model, InBody 770S, listing five frequencies and about 30 seconds.

InBody 770, InBody 770S and other versions can differ in outputs, functions and software. Do not assume a video for another generation describes your test or that a polished printout is a medical diagnosis. Ask for the exact model and which numbers are direct electrical measurements and which are algorithmic estimates.

Which results appear—and what do they really mean?

Depending on the report format and settings, you may see body weight, estimated total body water, fat mass and percentage, skeletal muscle mass, fat-free mass, segmental estimates, extracellular water relative to total water (ECW/TBW), phase angle and additional indexes. “Skeletal muscle mass” is not muscles being directly weighed: it is inferred through a model. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is calculated, not directly measured from oxygen consumption.

Report valueA useful questionWhat it cannot establish
Body fat mass and percentageIs estimated fat changing under stable testing conditions?Exactly where every fat deposit is, or your individual disease risk without other information
Skeletal muscle massDoes the estimated muscle component remain stable with training?Exact strength, muscle quality or a diagnosis of sarcopenia
Segmental lean massIs an arm or leg difference worth exploring over time? That an asymmetry must mean illness or injury
Total and extracellular water / ECW-TBWCould changes in water have influenced the estimates? The cause of edema or the condition of the heart or kidneys
Visceral fat, index and scoresShould risk factors be reviewed more carefully?CT-confirmed amounts of fat around internal organs

Read results together: lower weight caused mainly by a change in water is different from weight remaining stable while strength improves. The instrument's “reference range” is not a measure of your appearance or worth. Its thresholds arise from algorithms; health is much broader than a single printed report.

Why can a weak electrical signal estimate composition?

Current passes differently through fluid and tissues with different water content. InBody measures electrical resistance and related properties and applies equations to estimate composition. Multiple frequencies help it model water compartments. The instrument does not produce a direct picture of each muscle or chemically analyze fat.

Hydration, skin temperature, posture, food, activity, time of day, individual physiology and the calculation model can alter estimates. Significant fluid shifts weaken some underlying assumptions. Methodological reviews distinguish fairly repeatable readings under controlled conditions from more limited absolute accuracy for individual quantities. Decimal places on the report do not guarantee equal biological precision.

If you exercised intensely yesterday, drank unusually little today or changed salt intake, a new number may reflect fluid rather than new muscle or lost fat. Rather than treating one worse-looking reading as proof of deterioration, ask whether a change repeats and matches strength, body measurements, health and how you feel.

What happens during testing?

You normally remove shoes and socks, make sure the electrodes touch clean skin, stand on the platform and hold the hand electrodes in the indicated position without moving. There are no needles, heat treatment or expected painful recovery. You may return immediately to normal activities, with no medical or social downtime caused by the measurement itself.

Follow preparation instructions for the exact site and model. Try to arrive at a similar time of day, after your usual toilet visit, without strenuous exercise just beforehand and not directly after a heavy meal. Public instructions for self-testing on the 770 advise a gap after eating, but this is not a universal medical fasting rule. If delaying food could affect your health, agree on a safe protocol; do not deliberately dehydrate yourself to improve the printed fat percentage.

For follow-up measurements, keep the device, time of day, clothing, recent activity and hydration as comparable as possible. Note meaningful menstrual-cycle fluid fluctuations, illness, unusually hot weather, long travel or medication changes. Two tests are informative only when their conditions are comparable.

Who should avoid the test or seek extra advice?

Tell staff about a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or any other implanted electronic or essential life-support device. The InBody 770 manufacturer's manual says these users must not use the equipment because even its low current may interfere with such devices. Do not bypass the warning. Discuss alternative assessments with your clinician.

In pregnancy the 770 manual does not recommend testing; this is not a claim that every BIA method is universally forbidden. Ordinary composition algorithms also do not reflect typical pregnancy-related changes in fluid and tissue reliably. Pregnancy care uses obstetric assessments, not a commercial fat percentage. If you recently gave birth, are breastfeeding or have substantial fluid changes, discuss the usefulness and interpretation of the test with a clinician.

Visible edema, marked dehydration, amputation, problems standing or holding electrodes, injury and disorders that redistribute fluid can affect suitability or calculations. Correct posture and electrode contact are necessary. Never delay help for severe pain, faintness or unstable health merely to obtain a body composition chart.

When does the information support a real decision?

If you have trained for several months, repeated BIA estimates may supplement measurements of strength, clothing fit, circumference and activity. During nutrition changes supervised by a doctor or dietitian, they may help raise a question about unwanted loss of fat-free tissue. They are aids to monitoring and conversation—not instructions to diet aggressively or purchase aesthetic treatment.

During physical rehabilitation, segmental estimates can prompt useful questions, but cannot replace strength testing, functional examination or a clinician's rehabilitation assessment. InBody 770 does not diagnose cellulite or skin structure and cannot select a cosmetic device for you. Skin diagnostics address a different question entirely.

Why can two reports tell apparently different stories?

Imagine skeletal-muscle estimates fall between two appointments despite no change in training. If you were ill or changed your drinking habits, check the context first instead of declaring muscle loss. Temporary exercise-related water shifts can look like a composition change. Do not start restrictive eating or increase workouts because a program displays a downward arrow.

Some readings repeat well when conditions are standardized, yet can differ systematically from DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), which evaluates certain body components and bone mineral density. DXA also relies on assumptions and is not needed merely for a more attractive chart. In complex medical situations, a doctor selects investigations for the clinical question; laboratory tests, ultrasound or other studies may be more useful for assessing a specific organ.

Repeatability and absolute accuracy are different. The first asks whether comparable tests give similar values; the second asks whether the value matches an independently measured quantity. A machine may be consistent but systematically overestimate or underestimate fat. Be skeptical of claims of a perfectly precise whole-body scan.

When medical care matters more than another test

New or worsening swelling, especially one painful, red, swollen leg, requires prompt assessment. Breathlessness, chest pain or fainting calls for emergency help. Rapid unexplained weight loss, major weakness, persistent problems eating, marked thirst or major urine changes deserve medical evaluation. A seemingly normal InBody printout does not exclude illness.

Weight and body composition can be sensitive subjects. You may decline appearance comments or meaningless score comparisons and request the clinical purpose of each measure. Repeated checking that increases anxiety may be less helpful than infrequent meaningful monitoring.

Whom to ask and what should be explained

The quality of interpretation matters more than the report design. Ask which measures are estimates, what size of change exceeds likely measurement variation and which follow-up interval fits your goal. “What should I do differently after this?” is better than “What is my score?” The appropriate action may be no change, then a carefully standardized repeat compared with a training diary.

Ask who interprets results and knows when medical referral is needed. A trainer, dietitian, physiotherapist and physician have different roles; a fitness plan does not treat an endocrine condition. Ask where data are saved, who can view the printout and whether uploading to a shared system is optional. Your composition data are personal information.

For an aesthetic question, the test should never be a compulsory first step toward purchasing a service. It gives background context at most, not an examination of the treatment area or proof that treatment is necessary. Sometimes an ordinary consultation and simple observations are a better first step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compare my InBody report with home smart scales?

They may both track broad trends, but use different electrodes and algorithms. Small differences do not prove that your body has changed. Compare repeated readings on the same machine first.

What if my implant is orthopedic metal, not an electronic device?

It can affect some calculations and apparent symmetry. Tell the operator its type before testing and check the exact device instructions. The prohibition applying to pacemakers does not automatically apply to every metal implant.

Can the 770 be used for children or teenagers?

The manufacturer supports certain younger ages, but testing and interpretation require an age-appropriate protocol. Adult thresholds cannot assess a child's nutrition or growth; this requires a qualified pediatric professional.

Why does visceral-fat level differ from my waist measurement?

The instrument's index is an algorithmic estimate; waist circumference is an external measurement. They need not agree, and a difference alone does not prove either method is defective.

Do I need blood tests first?

Routine BIA needs no special blood tests. A doctor may still order tests independently if symptoms or suspected illness require them.
