DEKA Motus AY: Laser Hair Removal and Its Two Wavelengths

You want less hair growth on your legs or underarms and are comparing devices by name. A clinic description mentions DEKA Motus AY, Moveo technology and comfortable treatments. Here is the essential fact: Motus AY is a specific medical laser platform from Italian manufacturer DEKA/El.En. with 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser sources. The US FDA issued 510(k) clearance K181486 on 30 August 2018. This substantial-equivalence decision allows marketing for specified uses in the US; it does not prove that every mode works equally well, causes no pain or is available in Armenia.

What do two laser wavelengths offer?

Laser light is absorbed by structures in the skin. For hair removal, melanin—the pigment in hair shafts and follicles—is the relevant target. Delivered heat can damage structures involved in hair growth, gradually reducing the number of hairs. That is not instant removal of every hair: follicles have different growth phases, so results are assessed over a course and maintenance treatment may be needed.

The 755 nm alexandrite wavelength interacts strongly with hair pigment and may suit certain combinations of hair colour and skin tone. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength interacts differently with epidermal melanin and is often considered for more deeply pigmented skin, although tanning, treatment area, phototype and operator expertise all matter. Two sources in one device do not mean that safe settings are selected automatically. A trained clinician must choose the source, handpiece and parameters for you.

DEKA describes Moveo as a contact handpiece moved repeatedly across a defined small area, building heat progressively. Its website promotes comfort and virtually no side effects. These are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee. Laser treatment can still hurt and may cause burns, pigment changes or other complications despite cooling. Skin condition, delivered energy, overlap between passes and monitoring the tissue response remain important.

Why the AY model, other Motus devices and handpieces are not interchangeable

The maker also has Motus AX, AZ, PRO and other versions, which may differ in sources, features and compatible accessories. Settings or US indications listed for Motus PRO must not be transferred to Motus AY just because the names resemble one another. For AY, the independently documented basic feature is the dual 755/1064 nm sources. DEKA's catalogue also lists Moveo HR, PL, SR and VL accessories. Seeing these names in an advertisement does not prove that every accessory is installed at a particular clinic or suitable for your needs.

The US 510(k) documentation covers indications beyond hair reduction, including certain benign pigmented and vascular conditions and wrinkles, depending on the source. But this page helps you decide about hair reduction—not how to treat blood vessels or pigmented lesions generally. In particular, an unexplained or changing skin lesion should never simply be lasered as though it were unwanted hair. A physician must evaluate suspicious lesions first; a device cannot diagnose skin conditions.

When is laser hair reduction most likely to help?

Your hair and skinLikely expectationWhat to check
Dark, reasonably coarse hairs without a recent tanUsually a clearer target for laser hair reductionSkin phototype, sensitivity of the area and a skin test assessment
Blonde, grey, white or red hairsLess predictable because there is little suitable melanin targetWhether electrolysis or another method makes more sense
Dark skin or a tendency toward pigment changesPossible with careful wavelength and setting selectionOperator experience with your phototype and burn prevention
Recent tan, sunburn or irritationIncreased risk of an adverse skin responseWhether to postpone until the skin recovers and the tan fades
New coarse chin hair along with other hormonal symptomsThe laser will not correct an underlying hormonal factorWhether medical assessment of the hair growth is needed

“Permanent” needs an explanation. In FDA documents, permanent hair reduction means a stable long-term reduction in regrowing hair counts measured at specified intervals—not guaranteed elimination of every follicle forever. Body area also influences response. Hormonal activity on the female face, for example, may stimulate new growth after successful sessions. Discuss reduced density and less frequent shaving rather than a lifelong promise of perfectly bare skin.

When should you postpone, and what must the clinician know?

Before treatment, the clinician should assess your phototype, recent tanning, scarring or pigment-change tendency, previous treatment reactions, skin disorders and medications. Some medicines and skin products can increase photosensitivity or affect healing; the actual relevance needs individual medical review, not an online list. Active inflammation, wounds, infection or irritation in the treatment zone should be assessed and treated first. Disclose a history of herpes, burns or changing moles.

Evidence for elective laser hair removal during pregnancy is limited; discussing postponement with your clinician is sensible. If you notice sudden marked facial hair growth, menstrual changes, severe acne or other possible hormonal symptoms, laser may improve the visible hair but cannot replace diagnostic discussion. This does not mean every woman with chin hair has a hormonal disorder.

Do not wax or tweeze immediately before a course if the operator needs the hair shaft as an optical target. Shaving rather than plucking, and avoiding tanning, are commonly discussed. Your clinician should give exact timing and preparation instructions for your skin and equipment. Mention recent peels, retinoid use or irritation treatments as well. A quick last-minute briefing is not a substitute for examining the skin and taking your history.

What is a session like, and how painful is it?

The operator checks the area and skin, then selects the laser source, settings and suitable handpiece. Everyone needs eye protection rated for the laser; ordinary sunglasses are not enough. Hair should be prepared as instructed. You may feel contact, heat, tingling or short painful pulses. Moveo's multiple passes and cooling are designed for comfort, but “completely painless for everyone” is not a credible promise. Both the patient and everyone in the treatment room need protective goggles or shields rated for the wavelengths being used; treatment must not begin without appropriate protection. Laser eye injury can be serious.

Treatment time depends on area, hair density and settings; advertising minutes alone do not make a useful comparison. Conditions differ for underarms, legs and face. If heat becomes sharply painful, significant burning develops or you notice an unusual burnt-skin smell, tell the operator immediately rather than enduring it in pursuit of better results. Pain is not a performance target. A competent clinician monitors your skin and can explain the chosen wavelength.

How might your skin look tonight, tomorrow and over the next few days?

Redness, swelling around follicles and a sensation similar to mild sunburn are possible after laser hair removal. According to the AAD, common short-lived effects often subside in one to three days, but individuals vary. “No medical downtime” does not mean the treated skin looks untouched: small red dots on legs may show, and facial treatment may interfere with close-up photography. Avoid booking a first session right before a sunny holiday or major shoot.

Typical advice includes protecting treated skin from sunlight, avoiding friction and harsh products, and following individual recommendations about cooling and cleansing. Ask when you can return to exercise, swimming pools, hot baths or saunas; there is no reliable single number for every skin condition and treatment setting. Hairs may still be visible after the session and gradually shed later. That does not automatically mean the treatment failed, and you should not pluck against your aftercare instructions.

Blisters, serious burns, increasing pain, oozing, possible infection or unusual pigment changes need prompt clinical assessment rather than cosmetic cover-up. Severe reactions require timely medical help. Persistent dark or pale streaks also warrant review, since pigment changes can last. US FDA 510(k) clearance of a device does not prevent complications when the skin phototype or energy settings are assessed incorrectly.

Why you cannot judge an entire course from one visit

Not all follicles are in the same growth phase. The AAD states that most patients need two to six laser hair-removal sessions, although some may need more. The exact number depends on body area, hair, hormones and the response to earlier sessions. That is category-level guidance on laser removal, not a Motus AY-specific trial proving how effective Moveo will be for you. Reject guaranteed results by a fixed date if these factors are not discussed.

Track hair growth and skin condition under comparable conditions before and during the course, and note reactions. Finer hairs and shaving less often are useful goals. If remaining hairs are very light, the clinician should explain the physical limitation instead of simply selling endless sessions. On the female face, paradoxical hypertrichosis—unexpected increased hair growth after light-based removal—is also worth discussing. A systematic review linked reported cases mainly to face and neck sites; this is a reason to choose indications carefully, not to fear every fine facial hair.

How does Motus AY compare with other methods?

MethodPotential advantageLimitation
DEKA Motus AYTwo sources, 755/1064 nm; contact handpieces and Moveo are offeredResult depends on phototype, mode and operator; advertising alone is inadequate evidence
Single-wavelength alexandrite laserA clear target in pigmented hairNot automatically suitable for all tanned or deeply pigmented skin
Long-pulsed Nd:YAG on another platformOften considered for more pigmented phototypesComfort and results vary with equipment and operator expertise
ElectrolysisMay be an option for individual light hairsHairs are treated one by one; different sensation and time commitment
Shaving or trimmingNo course of laser heating or visitsTemporary effect and repeated maintenance

The most useful comparison is not a dramatic “best laser” list. Ask why a source was selected and how the operator will respond to your skin. Request the device model and handpiece identification, eye-protection plan, cooling arrangements, stop criteria and follow-up policy. If the clinic markets a newer device, get its full name: Motus PRO or AZ is not automatically the same as Motus AY.

Checking claims and cost in Yerevan

This page does not verify a Motus AY in any Armenian clinic, local legal status of a particular device, prices or an operator's credentials. Check these before prepayment. Ask to see the actual model, documents supporting lawful use, maintenance information and a plan for handling complications. A DEKA logo online does not prove the stated device, specified accessory or appropriately trained staff will be involved.

When comparing costs, ask what is included: treatment-zone area, consultation and phototype assessment, repeat sessions and care after any reaction. A cheap session is not a bargain if safety is unclear, while a higher price alone is no guarantee. Check “after” photographs for time since treatment, lighting, hair length and other hair-removal methods. A trustworthy practitioner also discusses continuing to shave without laser.

Questions to bring to the consultation

  1. Is this definitely DEKA Motus AY, and which laser sources and accessories are available for my area?
  2. Why are you recommending 755 or 1064 nm given my phototype, tan and hair colour?
  3. What is realistic for this area, and how will we measure the reduction in growth?
  4. Which eye protection is used, and who is trained to set up this equipment?
  5. What should I do if I develop a blister, burn, pigment change or unexpected hair growth?
  6. When can I resume sun exposure, exercise and my usual skin products?

Motus AY is worth understanding as a dual-wavelength device with a documented US regulatory pathway, but the name cannot replace personalised assessment. The goal is reduced unwanted hair growth at a reasonable level of risk and with clear expectations. You may defer the course, choose another method or decide against treatment entirely.

Further questions

Can a tattooed area be treated?

Routine laser hair removal should not be performed directly over a tattoo without specialist medical evaluation. Tattoo pigment may absorb energy and increase the risk of burns or changes to the design. Show the operator all tattoos before treating the area.

If hair grows between sessions, should I book another immediately?

No. Timing follows hair-growth cycles, skin response and the agreed plan—not the first hair that reappears. Ask which interim hair-removal methods are allowed and do not change the schedule yourself.
